UP, UP & AWAY GDP#071

I have just returned from a weekend at a craft stall, which was just a tad challenging!  Poor old New Zealand has been caught in a huge weather bomb and as we know, paper and water don't mix!  Thankfully I was indoors, but that didn't stop the wind whistling through the auditorium!

We have a fun challenge for you this week at Global Design Project, just a little different from our normal challenges - Off the page or 3 dimensional.  With my craft stall to decorate, this was quite timely, as I have been wanting to try my hand at a Vintage balloon!

There isn't a single stamp on this project, the first time I can recall that ever happening.  But it did take many hours to make as I had to guess what to do next as I went.  I couldn't find a tutorial anywhere that I could CASE that would help me.  Here is how I created this fun balloon:

I started by finding a template for a balloon though, which I traced onto card and cut by hand, twelve times!  I folded each in half lengthwise and then adhered together while alternating the colours. I then found some Striped Grosgrain ribbon to use as my balloon bunting.  I punched a small hole near the top of each card and secured the "bunting" by tying coordinating Bakers Twine through the holes.

Next I cut two straws in half to stand the balloon on.  I cut a small slit in the top of each straw and slid the straws onto the side edge of the balloon pieces then applied some liquid adhesive to help secure them.  I created the "basket" by making a small box to fit a tea light and adhering burlap ribbon around the side.  I think it looks just like a basket and the tealight just like the gas flame to fill the balloon!

So what do you have in mind?  Check out the Design Teams fun projects at Global Design Project too.  Honestly, I think this has been my favourite challenge to date!

  1. I love this project Paula - you are so talented. A perfect way to celebrate the Lift me up bundle and the theme in the new Occasions Catalogue. Hope the stall went well despite the weather.
